Energy costs are constantly increasing, and the hospitality industry in India has been consistently adopting energy management solutions in varying degrees.
Interestingly however, most of these solutions have been passive, like a key card solution that helps a hotel save energy in a room that is occupied. But what about a room that is unoccupied? It is here that energy continues to needlessly drain, adding to your monthly bills.
Energy is the biggest operating cost in a hotel after staff, and can be as high as 25%. In such a scenario, where a hotel needs to balance its guest comfort versus energy costs, could the answer lie in a smart energy management solution that has a real-time occupancy system?
To answer this question, IDS NEXT studied the benefits of a smart energy management solution, Energex. This is a decade old company based in Canada, with a large presence in North America.
Some of their clients include Sheraton Hotels and Resorts, The Fairmount, BestWestern and others. Energex Solution is available in India since early 2012, through a partnership with IDS NEXT.
Energex – Maximizing Revenue, Minimizing Energy WastageUsers of Energex can see real-time benefits, rapidly. To begin with, the solution can be retrofitted into a hotel room and is operational in as little as 30 minutes. The solution is integrated with current HVAC equipment, requires minimal wiring and thus does not impact guestroom décor. The solution reduces wear and tear of HVAC equipment and extends its life.
Most importantly, Energex can reduce your energy bill by as much as 25%. Also access a two year warranty on all parts and service contracts.
How a Smart Energy Management Solution Can Help You SaveAir conditioning in a hospitality property accounts for more than half the power consumption, and it is here that a Smart Energy Management Solution can help.
As part of our test scenario, we installed it in a single room of a 4 stared hotel for a couple of weeks. The energy usage was compared to a standard room with a key card solution. The test results were extrapolated to a year, and the savings a hotel can accrue annually with a smart energy management system were impressive.
We found that power consumption in a non-rented room was 5 units per day, while in a rented room with an Energex solution was 3 units per day. Going by Bangalore's cost of energy which is Rs 8 per unit, we extrapolate this saving to a 130 room property and the saving amounts to Rs 1.15 lakh per month and Rs 14 lakh per year.
Cost of deploying an smart energy management solution can be half of this, thus bringing in ROI in as little as six months. So if you are wondering if an energy management solution can work for you the answer is a resounding yes.
